Supported Employment

Updated: March 24, 2006

The Adult Services Supported Employment Program is available to clients who have an interest in working in the community rather than in a sheltered workshop. Through agency partnerships, a variety of services and supports are available to individuals so they may achieve their desired vocational goals. Individuals begin the Supported Employment process at the assessment and planning stage. During this phase, individuals choose the members of their planning team, develop goals, and identify supports needed to reach their goals. MCBMRDD Employment Specialists use the planning team’s recommendations to develop a job that best suits the individual’s goals.

On the job training and coaching is yet another support that is implemented to assure success of the individuals in our program. The job coach’s responsibilities include the implementation of support strategies, direct instruction of job tasks and related behavioral skills, developing friendships in the work environment, and documenting the individual’s progress. Upon completion of the training process, Supported Employment also provides ongoing follow-along services to ensure the long term success of the individual working in the community.

All individuals with MR/DD have the right, and should have the opportunity, to become participating members of the community through employment. The Supported Employment Department will secure employment for adults with MR/DD in Mahoning County and facilitate the individuals’ integration, acceptance, and satisfaction in that employment.
