Transportation

Transportation to and from the school, workshops, and retirement is available to any student or adult enrolled in day programs provided by the MCBMRDD. Transportation is also provided to individuals in Supportive Employment seven days a week from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Consisting of over 35 buses and 15 other vehicles, the Transportation Department fleet travels over 790,000 miles per year, as it provides door to door services to the passengers throughout Mahoning County. All MCBMRDD buses are equipped with hydraulic lifts to accommodate over 145 passengers who use wheelchairs.

To ensure the health and safety of our passengers, the MCBMRDD employs a transportation aide for each bus. Transportation aides meet the needs of the riders while on route, so bus drivers may devote their full attention to operating the bus. All drivers must hold a Commercial Driver’s License, and all drivers and aides must maintain Red Cross First Aid Certification. The Transportation Department received a 10 year safe driving award from Nationwide Insurance for the years of 1987 to 1997.

The safety and comfort of MCBMRDD passengers are top priorities of the Transportation Department. Since services are provided to Early Intervention (0-2 years) and Preschool (3 to 5 years), rear facing and forward facing car seats are installed on buses to transport children under four years of age and who weigh less than 40 lbs.

Each bus is equipped with a two-way FM radio. The radios allow bus drivers and dispatchers instant contact in case of emergency, and the radios ensure accurate and timely service to all riders.

Each bus is Board-owned, and maintenance is performed at the Board’s bus maintenance facility located next to Leonard Kirtz School.
